Job Description:

Senior Data Engineer / Consultant - Databricks
Data Practice | New Zealand-wide (Hybrid)

The Company

This well-established New Zealand consultancy has built a strong reputation in Integration, Data, AI and Cloud Consulting. Their team helps clients extract more value from their data through smart integration and analytics solutions, working across platforms such as Databricks, Azure, MuleSoft, Boomi and Solace.

Operating out of Auckland's inner-city Grey Lynn / Ponsonby area, the business prides itself on a down-to-earth, people-first culture — one where genuine curiosity, initiative and a desire to keep learning are part of the everyday fabric. Technically strong but never pretentious about it, they're looking for someone who fits that same practical mindset.

While an Auckland base is preferred, they're open to candidates in Wellington, Christchurch or elsewhere in NZ who can travel when projects require it.

The Opportunity

A growing data and analytics team is on the hunt for a Senior Data Engineer / Consultant to join them. It's a hands-on, client-facing role centred on delivering data solutions across Databricks, Azure and Microsoft Fabric for a range of customer environments — partnering with architects and delivery teams to design and build platforms that genuinely move the needle for clients.

This isn't a purely technical seat. You'll need to be just as comfortable in front of stakeholders, unpacking business problems and turning them into workable engineering solutions, as you are deep in the build itself. As a senior voice in the team, you'll also play a part in shaping solution design, guiding less experienced engineers, and helping the team grow.

I also swapped the closing reference to "the practice grow" → "the team grow" so it's consistent throughout. Let me know if "growing data and analytics team" still feels too close to the original, or if you'd rather frame it as a "consulting practice" or just "the team" generally.

The Day-to-Day

Expect to spend your time building and fine-tuning data pipelines across both lakehouse and warehouse setups, crafting clean, reliable data transformations that feed into analytics, reporting and AI/ML use cases. You'll be hands-on with Databricks, Delta Live Tables, Lakeflow and CI/CD tooling, with solid testing and data quality habits baked into how you work.

On the client side, you'll lead conversations that turn business needs into engineering plans, working alongside architects and delivery leads on how solutions come together. There's also a coaching element — supporting junior and intermediate engineers, sharing knowledge across the team, and helping refine the frameworks and standards the practice delivers against.

What You'll Need

  • 5+ years in Data Engineering
  • 4+ years' hands-on Databricks experience — Delta Live Tables, notebooks, workflows
  • Strong Python and SQL capability
  • Track record delivering lakehouse, warehouse or cloud-native data platforms
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and the broader Azure data stack
  • Solid grasp of data modelling and Medallion Architecture principles
  • Comfortable with Git, CI/CD and DevOps workflows
  • Experience building out testing and data quality frameworks
  • Confident stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Some experience mentoring or leading other engineers technically
  • Databricks certification (or genuine intent to pursue one)

The Right Fit

Someone who communicates well and genuinely enjoys client interaction, is self-driven and organised, and can juggle competing priorities without losing momentum. Curiosity and adaptability matter here, as does a solid problem-solving instinct and a collaborative, team-first attitude.

On Offer

A high-performing, supportive team environment; exposure to leading-edge tech across Databricks, Azure and Fabric; genuine room to grow technically and in your career; and modern offices spanning Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Melbourne and Brisbane. It's a role with real, visible impact across client work and the business more broadly.

If hands-on engineering combined with consulting and client engagement sounds like your kind of role, get in touch.

We are only considering candidates currently in New Zealand. If you are ready for a new challenge/opportunity and feel that this role aligns nicely with what's important to you then please feel free to apply.
