Senior API and Integration Testing Engineer - Mulesoft & Java Stack

Job Description:

Senior QA Engineer – API & Integration Focus – Mule and Java

Auckland | Hybrid / Flexible Working

This is a role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail — not just testing what’s in front of them, but understanding how systems talk to each other, where things can break, and how to build confidence across complex integrations.

We’re working with a business that operates across a distributed, integration-heavy environment, where APIs, messaging systems, and asynchronous workflows sit at the core of how everything functions. With that level of complexity, quality isn’t something that can be bolted on — it needs to be engineered in from the start.

That’s where this role comes in.

As a Senior QA Engineer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the reliability of these integrations. You’ll work closely with engineers and product teams to validate how systems behave under real-world conditions, while also driving smarter, more automated approaches to testing.

What you’ll be doing:

This role is as much about thinking as it is about doing.

You’ll be:

  • Testing API integrations across distributed systems, ensuring data flows correctly and reliably
  • Working with message queues and asynchronous processes (AMQ, SQS, SNS or similar) to validate complex event-driven workflows
  • Building and maintaining automation frameworks using tools like Cucumber, JUnit, and Selenium
  • Using Postman to validate APIs and simulate real-world scenarios
  • Contributing to test strategy, planning, and risk-based prioritisation
  • Supporting UI automation where needed using Cypress or Playwright
  • Embedding yourself within Agile squads, working closely with developers and product teams
  • Continuously improving how testing is approached across the delivery lifecycle

What we’re looking for:

This role will suit someone who is technically strong, naturally curious, and comfortable working in environments where systems are interconnected and constantly evolving.

You’ll likely bring:

  • Deep experience in API and integration testing across modern architectures
  • A solid understanding of messaging systems and asynchronous workflows
  • Hands-on automation experience with Cucumber, JUnit, and Selenium
  • Confidence using Postman for API validation and testing
  • Experience with modern UI automation tools such as Cypress or Playwright
  • Working knowledge of TypeScript
  • Familiarity with tools like Azure DevOps, TestRail, or similar

Experience with AccelQ is a bonus, but not essential.

More importantly, you’ll be someone who takes ownership, asks the right questions, and looks beyond the obvious when it comes to quality.

Why this role is worth exploring

There’s a lot to like about this opportunity, particularly if you enjoy working in technically rich environments:

  • You’ll be working on complex, integration-heavy systems where your input genuinely matters
  • There’s strong alignment between engineering and QA — quality is a shared responsibility
  • You’ll have the space to influence automation and testing practices
  • The team operates in a collaborative, Agile environment with a strong delivery focus
  • Flexible working arrangements support balance without compromising impact
